CYCLE RACK & SHELTER

Greater Wellington Regional Council - Metlink
Double Tier Cycle Rack & Storage Shelter

This new bike storage facility features a Dutch style two-tier cycle rack, providing a safe, secure place to store up to 24 bikes.

The upper sliding racks, have a gas assisted lifting mechanism, while the lower racks also slide out to keep the users body clear of the racks above when securing or removing their bike.

It was important for us to understand the relationship between Force and Leverage when we were deciding on which gas spring to source and the best way to configure it. We created a computer model where variables could be changed to simulate adjustments in the mechanism. This assisted with our decision making and led to the lever arm the gas spring was acting on being extended, and a tweak to the pivot point geometry. Our aim was to keep the mechanism small while assisting the user with lifting the bicycle as much as possible.

In a short space of time, the Designbrand team was able to progress this project from initial concept, working prototype, detailed design through to Pilot production. We enjoy working closely with our manufacturing partners to confirm our designs and decide the best manufacturing process path to follow. This close collaboration saves time and is also a valuable source of experience.
